Beauty in the Back Woods
I have just returned from spending the day with teachers from Old Town Elementary and Anderson Elementary in Dixie County, Florida, for a writing workshop. Old Town. It's past Turkeytown and Chiefland, out in the woods. But don't let the name fool you. Just because there are only two elementary schools in Dixie County doesn't mean there isn't some awesome teaching going on there. The teachers were BUBBLING OVER with enthusiasm. They shared riveting ideas and spoke highly of their students and faculties.
The superintendent of schools, Mr. Mark Rains, showed up during the workshop, stayed for part of a session, took notes, interacted with the teachers, and left me a personal note of solidarity. Yes sir, I was impressed. I hope the Florida DOE knows about these good folks.
